- This case study details the installation of SUFA-A sports lighting at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics ice arena, where the speed skating events were held. For this project, the SUFA-A 1.2kW product with a 5700K color temperature and 90 Ra Color Rendering Index was installed, and it included a remote driver and the GeSS® lighting control system.
In this project, a discrepancy arose between the simulation data and the installation data because the composition of the stadium's catwalk, where the lights were installed, was not symmetrically balanced with the arena, which created the difficulty of having to reinstall the lighting. Additionally, a phenomenon occurred where the light was obstructed by the upper structure of the stadium, but this problem was solved by fabricating and installing extended brackets.
From a broadcast perspective, to prevent light from being directed toward the main camera of the OBS, the vertical illuminance in all four cardinal directions had to be matched, and meeting the glare rating standard was by no means easy. However, because the SUFA 1.2kW product is composed of two 600W modules, it was certainly more advantageous for the lighting design compared to a 1.2kW integrated module.
The lighting standard for an Olympic stadium is based on vertical illuminance. The standard required by OBS was that the vertical illuminance in all four cardinal directions within the arena must meet a minimum of 1,200 lx, and for the warm-up track where athletes for the next race would be preparing, it had to meet 80% of the stadium's minimum illuminance.
Furthermore, the minimum illuminance for the 13 main cameras was 1,600 lx, and for the five SSM (Super Slow Motion) cameras, a minimum of 2,000 lx was required. In response to these demanding requirements, the GigaTera SUFA-A lighting not only met all conditions but the vertical illuminance within the arena was actually measured at a value 20% higher than the original design.
