- This project is North America's largest-scale rail logistics facility modernization project, in which over 1,100 aging lights at BNSF Railway's key facility, the Alliance Intermodal Facility in Texas—one of the largest freight rail networks in North America—were completely replaced with GigaTera's high-efficiency LED lighting system in 2019.
As one of the busiest inland ports in the world, the BNSF Alliance Intermodal Facility is a key artery of North American logistics that operates 24/7, 365 days a year. However, the 1000W class metal halide lighting it previously used incurred enormous maintenance costs due to frequent failures and a short lifespan, and its low energy efficiency was a serious problem that added to the burden of operational costs. Above all, the dark and non-uniform lighting environment was the greatest potential risk threatening the safety of nighttime workers.
To solve these complex problems, BNSF underwent a rigorous technical verification process with several lighting companies across North America, including extensive pilot tests. Ultimately, they selected GigaTera's high-output 'SUFA' series LED lighting as the final solution, which proved its superior performance, durability, and reliability even in the harshest railroad environments. The existing lights were replaced on a 1-to-1 basis, achieving an incomparable level of lighting quality and operational efficiency simultaneously.
Although no official feedback from a particular official was distributed for this project, its success is clearly proven by objective data. GigaTera's lighting system dramatically reduced energy consumption by over 60% and achieved the remarkable result of cutting maintenance costs by over 80% through its long lifespan of over 5 years. Most importantly, it maximized the safety of nighttime workers and significantly improved operational efficiency by more than doubling the illuminance across the entire terminal and improving uniformity.
