GigaTera's Light, Ensuring the Safety of the Skies
- This project is a premier global airport project in which the aging lighting of the entire apron, a key area of Sabiha Gökçen International Airport—one of the fastest-growing airports in Europe and Istanbul's second hub—was completely replaced in 2018 with GigaTera's ultra-high-efficiency LED lighting system.
The airport apron, where aircraft take off, land, and are serviced 24 hours a day, is a top-security area directly linked to aviation safety. However, the previously used 1000W and 2000W class metal halide lighting had chronic problems of high maintenance costs due to frequent lamp replacements and excessive energy consumption. Furthermore, glare that interfered with the vision of pilots and ground crew, along with non-uniform illuminance, were potential risk factors that hindered the safety of nighttime operations.
To solve these problems, GigaTera was selected as the final supplier after a fierce competition with the world's leading lighting companies, having been recognized for its technology and reliability. The existing aging lights were replaced on a 1-to-1 basis with GigaTera's flagship high-output LED lighting, the 'SUFA' series, creating an optimal lighting environment that perfectly meets the aircraft movement area lighting standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) with far less energy than before.
The project's success was most clearly proven through the voices from the field. An official from Sabiha Gökçen International Airport officially stated, "After replacing the lighting with GigaTera's LEDs, we have secured a much brighter and safer apron environment than before, and we are very satisfied as we also expect maintenance costs to be dramatically reduced," expressing high satisfaction with the project's results.
Through the successful execution of this project, GigaTera has once again proven its world-class technology that perfectly meets the demanding standards of an international airport, and this has become an important milestone in targeting the global airport market.
