The More Advanced SUFA-A Series Sports Lighting

The Yankee Stadium project was a case of replacing 888 units of 1kW, 1.5kW, and 2kW metal halide products from a well-known company in the sports lighting industry with 692 units of the SUFA-A 1kW product. The demolition of the existing products and the installation of the SUFA-A products were carried out simultaneously. With 6 people assigned to demolition and 20 to installation, the product installation was completed in just two weeks from the start of the work.

The work sequence began with the demolition of the existing Musco products. Once a certain amount of demolition was complete, the SUFA-A products were lifted to the upper part of the stadium, and the installation proceeded by first mounting the external converters along the frame, followed by the luminaires themselves. For the detailed aiming of the 1,384 individual SUFA-A modules, three specialists were deployed, completing the task in just four days. The project was finished far ahead of the locally anticipated schedule of over a month, once again astonishing the stadium officials. Of course, the installation time was able to be shortened because the lighting at Yankee Stadium is installed along the top edge of the stadium, not on towers.

Given the nature of a baseball stadium, the detailed aiming of the lights was one of the most critical procedures. Based on lighting simulations, GigaTera's optical team installed flags on the field in a 30ft x 30ft grid and was able to conduct the detailed aiming using a laser beam. Because the SUFA-A product is structured to allow for module-level rotation and tilt, it was possible to achieve uniform lighting without overlapping beams. Although it rained on some days during the installation, the work could proceed without interruption thanks to the product's IP66 rating.

Yankee Stadium, the second MLB stadium to have LED lighting installed, debuted the SUFA-A 1000W lights to the public on December 27th during the 6th Pinstripe Bowl. A noteworthy aspect of this project is that while Yankee Stadium is primarily used for baseball, it is also used for football games. For this reason, while the infield in a typical baseball stadium is brighter than the outfield, the illuminance levels of the infield and outfield at this stadium were configured to be almost identical.
