Back in the Game with GigaTera's Light

This project is a key installation case study of the complete replacement of the existing 1,500W metal halide lighting at Dongcheon Gymnasium—the home stadium of the Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus professional basketball team and a major multi-purpose indoor sports venue representing Ulsan—with GigaTera's MAHA lighting system in August 2024.

GigaTera deeply understood the prestige of the home stadium of a leading KBL club and the challenge of enhancing player performance while maximizing spectator immersion. Considering the structural characteristics of the 24-meter-high indoor arena, the top priority was to deliver uniform and abundant light across the entire court while fundamentally controlling glare for both players and spectators. GigaTera's optical engineering team conducted precision simulations targeting indoor gymnasiums of under 20 meters, and adopted the asymmetrical indirect lighting MAHA series as the optimal solution to overcome the limitations of the previous lighting.

Through the innovative cut-off technology of the MAHA series, GigaTera perfectly controlled stray light, which causes light pollution and glare, and established a superior visual environment by focusing all light energy onto the court. Simultaneously, the RGB event lighting installed in the corners has become a key element in providing fans with a dynamic entertainment experience that goes beyond simply watching a game by heightening the atmosphere during scoring or important moments.

The most significant feature of this project is that, in contrast to the general practice of installing SUFA lighting in indoor gymnasiums, MAHA lighting was installed to achieve optimal light distribution due to the specific characteristics of the low-ceiling gymnasium.
