Illuminating the Gateway to Korea: The Incheon Bridge Project
A 21.38km Ribbon of Light Over the Sea
- As the longest bridge in South Korea and the primary gateway for international visitors, the Incheon Bridge (21.38km) serves as the nation’s first impression. Spanning the open sea, this critical infrastructure faces an unforgiving environment characterized by salt-laden winds and harsh weather. Consequently, the lighting system requires not only exceptional durability against corrosion but also uncompromising visibility to ensure the safety of high-speed traffic.
To revitalize this iconic landmark, Incheon Bridge Co., Ltd. selected GigaTera as its partner. This decision was driven by GigaTera’s proven track record of excellence on the global stage, including the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics and lighting retrofits for Major League Baseball (MLB) stadiums. GigaTera’s proprietary technology—specifically designed to withstand moisture, dust, and saline corrosion—was identified as the key to successfully executing the first-ever full-scale LED transition for a major bridge in Korea.
Between July and August 2019, the project saw the installation of 1,305 units of GigaTera’s META 180W LED street lights, replacing the legacy 400W high-pressure sodium lamps. The result was a technological triumph: the META 180W delivers superior brightness and clarity while slashing energy consumption by over 50%. This modernization not only maximized energy efficiency but also completely resolved issues associated with aging infrastructure, such as color temperature degradation and uneven light distribution.
The Incheon Bridge has been transformed from a mere transit route into a luminous landmark that projects the sophisticated image of Korea as a global IT powerhouse. By replacing the dim, aging yellow lights with crisp, clear LED illumination, GigaTera has harmonized driver safety with aesthetic beauty. Today, the Incheon Bridge stands as a welcoming beacon, guiding visitors across the sea with the finest light Korea has to offer.
"The META series successfully met the most stringent requirements for the Incheon Bridge, including maintaining consistent illuminance across the nation's longest span and providing robust corrosion resistance. This project stands as another testament to GigaTera's unrivaled technological leadership." — GigaTera Representative
