GigaTera's Light, Illuminating America's First Smart City
- This project is a premier overseas public safety solution in which GigaTera's IT-converged smart streetlights, the META-Whistle and SPES-SETA, were installed as the first pilot in the United States in the city of Round Rock, Texas, changing the paradigm of urban safety and presenting a blueprint for the smart city of the future.
The City of Round Rock made citizen safety its top priority and was seeking an innovative solution to most effectively respond to unpredictable emergency situations on its roads. In particular, the risk of secondary accidents after a traffic collision and the absence of a rapid warning system for natural disasters were the most critical challenges the city needed to solve.
To solve the city's challenges, GigaTera proposed the most advanced solution, one that transforms 'light' from simple illumination into a 'life-saving signal.' On major roads, 100 units of the META-Whistle, which flashes a red warning light in an emergency, were installed, creating an innovative safety net that visually alerts drivers to danger and prevents secondary accidents. Additionally, in the 'Safety Exchange Zone' near the police station, the SPES-SETA, which combines CCTV and Wi-Fi, was installed to complete a perfect security system capable of 24/7 real-time monitoring.
The project's overwhelming success was clearly validated by voices from the field. Allen Banks, the Round Rock Chief of Police, lauded the system, saying, "Because people are more sensitive to visual signals than audible ones, the Whistle signal from the streetlights will prepare drivers and will be a matter of saving another life."
Floyd Thomas, a local resident, also expressed his highest satisfaction, stating, "It's really cool. The strategy of using streetlights to signal a crisis is a great idea." This project, which not only achieved a phenomenal energy saving of up to 85% compared to the previous lighting but also received praise from both citizens and the police, is a premier success story that proves how technology can make a city safer.
