A Light that Illuminates the City's Night Becomes an Eye that Protects the City Itself

GigaTera's Light, Making the Future of the Smart City a Reality

This project is a premier success story where GigaTera's IT-converged smart streetlight, SPES-SETA, was installed as a key infrastructure for the 'Global Smart City Demonstration Complex' established in 2017 in the Centum City area of Haeundae, Busan, to go beyond the simple provision of light and present a new standard for a 'smart city platform' responsible for urban safety and convenience.

The Busan Global Smart City Demonstration Complex project was a national initiative allowing citizens to directly experience the advanced services of a future city through Internet of Things (IoT) technology. The biggest challenge was to build a 'platform' that could most efficiently integrate and operate numerous IT technologies—such as CCTV, Wi-Fi APs, and various environmental sensors—without compromising the city's aesthetics.

To solve this national challenge, GigaTera proposed an innovative solution that transforms streetlights into smart hubs for collecting and controlling all of the city's information. In a key 300-meter section of Centum City, densely populated with BEXCO and large shopping malls, a total of 39 smart streetlights, including 12 SPES-SETA units equipped with CCTV, and 22 standard security lights were installed. This was not a simple lighting replacement, but a massive transformation that redefined the city's core infrastructure.

After the project's completion, the streets of Centum City were completely transformed into a smart space that monitors urban conditions in real-time, 24/7. The SPES-SETA plays a key role, not only in video recording and road condition monitoring via CCTV, but also in collecting and transmitting data on power consumption, illuminance, GPS location, and the environment to a cloud server. Furthermore, it achieved a 60% energy saving by replacing the existing 250W metal halide lamps with 100W LEDs, and enabled additional energy savings through wireless dimming control. The project received an official evaluation stating that it 'faithfully fulfilled its role as a true IoT-based smart streetlight,' and was recorded as a premier success story that presented a blueprint for the city of the future.
