Data-Proven Technology Drives Through the City Night

This project is a premier roadway lighting solution in which GigaTera's high-efficiency 'META' roadway light was applied in 2014 to the DUKE (Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway), a key transportation artery in Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur, to perfectly prove with data the two key challenges of energy savings and light quality improvement and to set a new standard for metropolitan traffic.

The DUKE Expressway, which runs through the northeastern part of downtown Kuala Lumpur, is a key road network used by countless citizens. In replacing the previously installed 450W class high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps, the ordering authority presented the top priority of not just saving energy, but also achieving a qualitative improvement in illuminance (brightness) and luminance (glare) for safe driving. This was an essential requirement to reduce drivers' visual fatigue and to prevent nighttime traffic accidents.

To meet the high requirements of the ordering authority, GigaTera provided an optimal solution based on precise on-site analysis and simulations. It focused on maximizing light quality while dramatically lowering power consumption by replacing the existing 450W HPS lamps with 180W high-efficiency 'META' LED lighting.

The overwhelming data measured after the project's completion clearly proves how GigaTera's technology can transform a site. Power consumption was reduced by a phenomenal 60%, and the most important light quality metric, overall uniformity (the evenness of light), was improved by 59%. This means that an environment has been created where drivers can drive much more comfortably and safely with the light evenly distributed and without dark areas on the road. This result led to an official evaluation that it "fully satisfied the ordering authority's requirements," and it was recorded as a premier success story that illuminates the capital's night more safely and efficiently.
